The Relics have re-captured winning form thrashing a hapless Avoca 3-0 at home. Player-Coach Zico had a grin like a split watermelon post match as he celebrated not only a much needed win but a dazzling individual goal. Even his absolute contempt for enigmatic midfielder and marquee signing Cerezo was put to the background for a few minutes as he belted out the team song in fading light at Frost Reserve. The win by the Relics was that impressive that the team supporters were left to lament, will this be the best Roos' team not to get to the final and win the flag in 2009!
The early exchanges were evenly shared with the Avoca forwards handling the wet and sloppy conditions a little better, however, the back three of Oscar, Leandro and Luizinho were strident in defence keeping the Avoca strikers at bay, much to the delight of Relics' Keeper Peres.
An early attacking foray down the right saw Cerezo put right winger Isidoro into space for an early shot on goal which was just kept out by the Avoca keeper. Such was the force of this strike by Isidoro the Avoca keeper was seen wringing his heavily gloved hands for several minutes. This early strike obviously dented the keeper’s confidence. From this point the Relics’ dominated.
Midway through the first half Relics’ striker Serginho failed to convert after some sensational lead-up work from Falcao on the left who found Serginho’s head with pinpoint precision. Usually as safe as a bank, Serginho pushed the ball wide, much to the glee of the opposition who had left an open goal mouth. Five minutes later Serginho was to make amends for blowing the early chance with a stinging header following a brilliant free kick from super sub Batista who guided a left footer from well in his own half to Serginho’s eager melon. Serginho’s head is obviously a decent target.
With a 1-0 lead and brimful of confidence, the Relics’ pushed the ball around with gay abandon. None were better in this department than Cerezo and Falcao, ably supported by Relics’ legend Socrates who entered the match after keeping the bench warm for 20 minutes. Junior was very creative in the midfield whilst crowd favourite and self designated Relics' sex symbol Ronato also entered the match from the bench and he too delighted the crowd with his deft attacking skills at right wing. The Relics’ also appreciated the beer donated by Ronato and his sponsors for post match drinks.
The Relics' second goal saw the midfield deliver the ball to the feet of the much feted striker Zico who used his trademark silken skills to weave a path through the Avoca defence to hammer home a goal. This display of individual brilliance, not only brought the large crowd to their feet, but destroyed what slim hope Avoca had of getting back into the match.
The second half saw the Relics’ deliver the same brand of dominance. Left wing Juninho worked the left side with great aplomb delivering accurate balls to his midfield comrades. Striker Dircue again worked as hard as the energiser bunny and continually pestered the Avoca defence. This unbridled attack paid dividends late in the second half as he combined with Eder who scored the Relics’ final goal after some delightful footwork.
BB
Wot o BB. Surely this is the 1982 Brazil boys, but they got brazillioned and skinned in the world cup by the wops. Lets compare ourselves to Brazil in 1970.
ReplyDeleteI've assumed the GAY abandon refers to Cerezoss ball's habit, I note he had several golden ones and later added a silver.
Also I adore being compared to him, as hes younger than Shadow, Pete and Brian!! LOL
The Hat
Read the article carefully Hat! You are Falcao. Falcao bore a striking resemblance to Freddy Mercury and I understand shared similar personal interests... Diamond is Cerezo.
ReplyDeleteQue? Great report - I have enough trouble trying to remember every nickname let alone the new ones in Spanish - you're not sucking up to the coach are you?
ReplyDeleteSorry BB. Got confused by your use of the word enigmatic. I thought it meant you could run faster than a slow trotter, but now I know it refers to Diamond, obviously had the wrong meaning. I agree I have several things in common with Freddie. He liked rockabilly music, E.G. Earl Scruggs, Lester Flatt etc plus was enormously popular and "self deprecating about his incredible skills on his instrument". Quote from his BI o.
ReplyDeleteHe also had an interest in men.
