Relics' Crush Desperate Avoca 3-0

The Relics have re-captured winning form thrashing a hapless Avoca 3-0 at home. Player-Coach Zico had a grin like a split watermelon post match as he celebrated not only a much needed win but a dazzling individual goal. Even his absolute contempt for enigmatic midfielder and marquee signing Cerezo was put to the background for a few minutes as he belted out the team song in fading light at Frost Reserve. The win by the Relics was that impressive that the team supporters were left to lament, will this be the best Roos' team not to get to the final and win the flag in 2009!

The early exchanges were evenly shared with the Avoca forwards handling the wet and sloppy conditions a little better, however, the back three of Oscar, Leandro and Luizinho were strident in defence keeping the Avoca strikers at bay, much to the delight of Relics' Keeper Peres.

An early attacking foray down the right saw Cerezo put right winger Isidoro into space for an early shot on goal which was just kept out by the Avoca keeper. Such was the force of this strike by Isidoro the Avoca keeper was seen wringing his heavily gloved hands for several minutes. This early strike obviously dented the keeper’s confidence. From this point the Relics’ dominated.

Midway through the first half Relics’ striker Serginho failed to convert after some sensational lead-up work from Falcao on the left who found Serginho’s head with pinpoint precision. Usually as safe as a bank, Serginho pushed the ball wide, much to the glee of the opposition who had left an open goal mouth. Five minutes later Serginho was to make amends for blowing the early chance with a stinging header following a brilliant free kick from super sub Batista who guided a left footer from well in his own half to Serginho’s eager melon. Serginho’s head is obviously a decent target.

With a 1-0 lead and brimful of confidence, the Relics’ pushed the ball around with gay abandon. None were better in this department than Cerezo and Falcao, ably supported by Relics’ legend Socrates who entered the match after keeping the bench warm for 20 minutes. Junior was very creative in the midfield whilst crowd favourite and self designated Relics' sex symbol Ronato also entered the match from the bench and he too delighted the crowd with his deft attacking skills at right wing. The Relics’ also appreciated the beer donated by Ronato and his sponsors for post match drinks.

The Relics' second goal saw the midfield deliver the ball to the feet of the much feted striker Zico who used his trademark silken skills to weave a path through the Avoca defence to hammer home a goal. This display of individual brilliance, not only brought the large crowd to their feet, but destroyed what slim hope Avoca had of getting back into the match.

The second half saw the Relics’ deliver the same brand of dominance. Left wing Juninho worked the left side with great aplomb delivering accurate balls to his midfield comrades. Striker Dircue again worked as hard as the energiser bunny and continually pestered the Avoca defence. This unbridled attack paid dividends late in the second half as he combined with Eder who scored the Relics’ final goal after some delightful footwork.

Micky- This is a Bench !!

I saw our coach has come to his senses, and strengthened the midfield with Diamond and the Indy Adventure Lovin Hat in the centre. With Micky running the bench I thought I'd remind him what it looks like. I have $5 that says the first sub is made within 5 minutes, and Micks ass parts from the bench!

PS this is the Hats furst B Log

And thanks goes to..

...Mickledinho, Diamond and the Beer Bitch who are going to mark the fields at frost tomorrow at 3pm. With all this rain there wont be much left to trace over so a lot will have to be estimated.

I know they will also be taking the esky with them...

Hey guys can you start on field 2 first please.

Coach wants more.

In order for me to get more time on the park, I have asked Mick to do the substitutions for this game. I have trouble concentrating on my game and the bench at the same time, he is going to give it a go, see how it goes, thanks Mick.

After the game, us and one of the 35s side will have to pack up all equipment on the park as we are the last games.

Apparently we will also be required to mark the fields prior to one or more Saturdays in the next 4 weeks, let you know what happens with that.

Starting line up 11.

Relics Rally Against 'Smugglers'

In front of hundreds of adoring home fans the Relics superstar Downhill Dave celebrated his 50th year on the planet and the team returned to form in a 3-0 loss to competition heavyweights and un-backable favourites the Budgewoi Cobwebs, affectionately known in the south as the Budgie Smugglers. This match was played in stark contrast to the Relics first round encounter against the Cobwebs who walloped the hapless Relics 6-0. Today the Relics showed much more grit and determination against the boys in canary yellow, and for most of the game took the fight right to them.

Downhill was spectacular as he tore through the Cobwebs’ defence with the ferocity of a raging triceratops. Downhill was equally as impressive in post match festivities as he celebrated in style with team mates and their families, regaling the assembled masses with tales of present and past glories. In fact, it was a jibber fest with most Relics eager to push their own barrow for any one who was willing to listen, and it seemed to this casual observer, that the more inebriated they became the better they were. Some even tried to influence the content of this match report! Now back to the match…

The Relics running uphill and into the sun in the first half conceded two relatively soft goals, but were unlucky not go into the interval 2-2. Midway through the first period The Crow hit the post after finding himself in prime goal scoring territory after some tremendous lead up work from the Relics midfield. Captain courageous, Mickledinho, also found the keeper and the crossbar from the front of goals in successive goal scoring opportunities. At this point the Relics back three were heard to mutter some unkind words in reference to the Relics striking capacity, but we won’t go there…

There was no greater signal that the Relics meant business when Diamond early in the match, and in an uncharacteristic display of speed, sprinted 20 metres in an attacking move that saw him touch the ball three times. Despite immediately signally to Coach Vic to be subbed, this display spurred on his team mates. Later in the match, however, Diamond was to earn the ire of Coach Vic as he failed to find the Bitch’s feet with a pass after the Bitch had sprinted, like a wildebeest across the African savannah, 70 metres into open territory and, with a half decent pass, seemed certain to score.

Apart from the woes of missed opportunity the Relics were dynamic in both attack and defence for most of the game. Coach Vic must have been pleased with the way his team pushed the ball around and created space, putting the cobwebs under pressure many times. Apart from Downhill, who was absolutely devastating, The Hat and Diamond were very effective in the midfield, although a post match comment from the Hat to Diamond relating to lubrication and the two of them sharing a spa was cause for extreme alarm, so much so that for the remainder of this report The Hat will be known as Back Door.

In the second half Back Door was lurking on the left (adjacent to the men’s facilities) and was continually fed good balls from The Silver Brumby. Back Door was relishing The Silver Brumby's balls and the service he was receiving and he reciprocated by feeding The Silver Brumby’s balls inturn to Coach Vic, Mickledinho, Diamond, Statue, the Bitch and the Axe.

The second half defence from the Relics was fantastic. Shadow, The Toe, Maximillion, The Silver Brumby and Banker spoiled numerous attacking forays from the quicker and more youthful Cobwebs’ strikers. Maximillion was sensational turning in a defensive performance that belied his 70 years and weary body. The Toe provided the final touch to finish a number of promising opposition manoeuvres. Banker and Shadow orchestrated some great offside plays and as usual the Man Mountain was a tower of strength in goals.

The following match, however, was in doubt as ground officials worked feverishly to fill the divot left by the Axe after a failed attempt close to goals. According to onlookers the hole left by the Axe was "big enough to catch a brown bear."

A big thank you from the team to Elise for hosting Dave’s birthday celebration.

Diamond Loses Lusture and Spits Dummy

The Relics have lost their fourth successive match with the tension starting to show as Diamond spits dummy big time. Midway through the second period Diamond went for a 5 metre scamper and when not presented with a perfect ball shouted “this is bullshit” and stormed off. Stunned onlookers shielded the ears of their children as Diamond spat out expletive after expletive. To his credit Diamond regained his composure and begged Coach Vic to be re-admitted to the game. Coach Vic although seething at such a petulant outburst, reluctantly allowed Diamond to re-enter the game.

Despite the dummy spit, the remaining Relics played hard and should consider themselves unlucky to have lost the fixture two nil. For huge chunks of the game the Relics dominated possession. The last pass went astray numerous times as the Relics repeatedly threatened the Fossils defence.

Both Fossils goals were against the run of play. The first an opportunist breakaway and the second as a result of some goal mouth confusion from the men in shitty mustard yellow and maroon.

The Relics went into the match with a number of players sidelined due to injury and work commitments. Nether-the –less the Relics attacking stocks were bolstered with the inclusion of Pakistani import, Mhusta Bin [Pullen]. Mhusta was sparkling in attack and unlucky on several occasions not to score with some spirited long range attempts. Luckily, most of these shots resulted in Fossil throw-ins, and this kept them under pressure, and the Relics on the attack!

The match video also reveals strong games from Downhill Dave, The Toe, Shadow, The Crow, The Hat and The Silver Brumby. Downhill and The Toe were devastating at times cleverly winning possession from Fossil attackers and sending precision balls to the feet of eager Relics. Shadow led well from the rear, combining well with The Crow and Hat. The Silver Brumby relished his opportunities in the midfield and was as keen as a colt all day, despite missing an open goal from 10 metres. Mickledinho had trouble finding space (and the giant’s house) all game as he was “double teamed” by the Fossils defenders.

As usual MM was solid in goals, with one superb save in the first half the talk of the football world. MM also excelled in hosting the after match function at his house. Visitors to the MM mansion, however, were left wondering; where is the beanstalk?
The Axe ran all day with one Fossil likely to be a bit stiff and sore in the ribs this morning following a typically strong Axe challenge. The Toe also suffered some friendly fire as the Axe almost chopped Toe in half as both he and Axe contested possession.

All in all there was much for Coach Vic to be pleased about as the Relics played the best they have for some time during patches of the match. Next week will be a tough assignment against the Big Noting Budgie Smugglers but the Relics will no doubt be strengthened by the return of Dallas, Maximillion and BB.

Segments of the match video will shortly be available on the Blog.
