Time to Dig Deep Relics

The Relics are officially in a form slump after capitulating for a second time this season to the over-performing Gosford Cavemen. Not only was this a humiliating defeat in front of a bumper Frost Reserve crowd, the 3-0 drubbing came at a cost as the Axe limped off mid-way through the second half with a torn quadriceps muscle.

Coach Old Crow will need to reach deep into his bag of tricks in order to get the rusty Relics back into form for their must win match against arch-rivals, the Avoca Gumbies next Saturday. If the Relics lose next week they would be at long odds to push for premiership glory.

Some of the words used post match by the Relics followers, including the children, to describe the Relics performance included pathetic, wretched, dismal, sad, incompetent, pitiable, weak, useless, feeble, inept, bungling and hopeless – and that just the first half!! Let’s hope that after such stinging criticism the boys can confront the challenge head on and charge to the finals. As a Relic it was very excruciating to sit and listen to the Cavemen victory chant ring in our ears from the other side of the oval.

From the start the Relics defence seemed at sixes and sevens in trying to mark-up on the two loan strikers. Like our last encounter their sole tactic of reefing the ball downfield, either by keeper kick or goal kick, and then following through in attack paid dividends. Both men up front had pace and that affected the capacity of the Relics defence to effectively mark-up.

The Relics probably enjoyed more time in their opposition half than their opponents but were unable to deliver that final pass for goal success. On at least six occasions the ball was kicked across the Cavemen’s goal mouth without successfully finding a Relic foot or melon.

Let’s all make an effort to get to training this week and how about we make the Musketeers creed “all for one and one for all” our clarion call for the rest of season 2011.

PS Happy Birthday Shadow and thanks for being the host with the most Flem!

  3. Hey Howler tough call for a penalty I know, I thought it was a great save of the line, guess the Refs have declared that the use of your front legs to kick the ball will be considered a hand ball.
