Coach Vic Turns Professional!
In an amazingly unselfish display Coach Vic withdrew himself from the playing roster to face the Smuggler’s to give full concentration to his coaching duties. Pre-game chatter was optimistic despite the previous results against the Smuggler’s this year as Coach Vic brought further adjustments to the starting line up.
In major moves, probably designed to shore up the back line, Downhill Dave was moved to sweeper and Statue to right back. The early play was relatively even, despite the propensity of the Smuggler’s to run, and pass, and tackle, tactics somewhat unfamiliar at times to the Relics. However at around the 10 minute mark Roy suffered a twinge to some part of his anatomy and was soon headed for the bench in the hope that a buxom Swedish masseuse might be available for a rub down, but no luck there. This brought Dallas into the fray causing some difficulty for the Smuggler’s flanker as he was no longer able to run around a defender.
Whether the introduction of Dallas unsettled the back line is still under investigation but the solid defence, anchored by Downhill Dave, was rocked when an innocuous cross came in from the Smuggler’s right and despite Man Mountain having it well covered nothing could have overcome the Maximillion factor. This tireless workhorse was once again right on the spot to meet the cross and as happens at least once a year managed to deflect the ball so casually that even Man Mountain, although getting a hand to it, was unable to prevent the own goal. Relics down one.
Shortly after conceding, the Relic’s recovered their composure, moving the ball around nicely with it finally ending out wide on the right with The Hat. Taking a moment to compose himself The Hat, with the deftness of a Tiger Wood’s five iron drive to the green, lofted a long range shot (?) sending the ball streaking towards it’s target. The Smuggler’s keeper, clearly taunted by the on coming ball, rushed off his line and then whether he was blinded by the midday sun or as more likely by the audacity of The Hat taking a shot from such distance failed in his judgement. The ball falling short of the keeper then rose sharply after landing clearly evidencing the degree of top spin placed upon it by The Hat to bounce over the keeper and lodge securely in the Smuggler’s net.
The remainder of the first half was relatively uneventful although a dazzling run by the Diamond saw him take the ball out of the grasp of the Smuggler’s keeper then realising he was heading the wrong way and with all the grace and speed of the Titanic he turned to face the goal. Possibly already hearing the hero worship ring in his ears he studied the situation. "Do I slam it at the near post, do I slide it past the keeper to the far or do I chip him??" Too many questions and in the end a simple back pass resulted in a grateful keeper hardly moving. One all at the break.
The second half commenced whilst the Relic’s were still enjoying a siesta and a lack of coordination down the middle quickly saw the Smuggler’s play some silky smooth football resulting in a two on one against Man Mountain and the tie was broken.
For much of the period the game was lacklustre with the Relics scrambling defence often required and ball control not overly evident. Around three quarter time a clearly distressed Silver Brumby, overcome by intense agoraphobia (fear of open spaces) from having too much room on the left hand side, took a short break on the side to regain his composure. This seemed to spur the Relics on as they also became aware of the space. Ball movement improved and despite starting to exert some pressure the defence was unable to match a counter attack and the Smuggler’s went to 3-1 up.
From the restart the Relics continued to use the space and in the final 10 minutes of the game opportunities opened up. In one display of unselfish play the Diamond and Micheldinho (mojo may still be missing) cracked the Smuggler defence only to both be reluctant to shoot. The short interchange of passes eventually ending when the Diamond hit a dynamic shot only to have the keeper parry it away. The Relics clearly ended with the better chances but they went unconverted and the result remained unchanged.
Cheers

Contract Torn Up
Apparently the Smugglers' had a 'get-out clause' which enabled them to sever ties if Mickledinho lost his mojo. It is thought that Smuggler 'scouts' had been watching Mickledinho in recent weeks and are convinced his mojo has been lost!
This sensational news comes on the eve of the blockbuster between the Relics' and the Smugglers' in what many believe could be the GF prelude.
Mickledinho will obviously have a point to prove at midday tomorrow!

Relics Reeling After Loss
The first ten minutes of the match was very promising for the Relics’ with the entire team pushing the ball around like seasoned first-graders. Despite the searing midday heat the boys from Kincumber really looked the goods and went into half time having matched the Tossils’ in all facets of the game.
Then the wheels fell off. The second half was poor. The Relics’ lost their passion to compete.
Coach Vic will need to dig deep into his coaching tool kit to find the tools to tune his men for their match against the Smugglers this week. Even though a draw guarantees the Relics’ a semi-final spot Coach Vic must rally his boys to push for a win. If Doylo can beat the Smugglers 3-1 so can the Relics!
Coach Vic must ignite the flame and fire the passion. No more mister nice guy!
Mickledinho must find his mojo!
It is time for all Relics’ to stand-up and give the remaining matches this season a red-hot go! C’Mon fellas…
Time to pull the finger out!
Time to play like Tarzan and not like Jane!

Time to play for yourself and your mate!
Time to add to the Relic legend!
Time to drink more beer!

Relics Squander Opportunities
The match commenced 9 minutes late as the Relics were shirtless with Manager Statue failing to arrive on time. Statue had the shirts, well almost all of them, and if he had have been 1 minute later the Relics would have been forced to wear “skins”. The Doylo women were particularly keen to see the Relics shirt-less as Diamond, in his best redneck attire, had certainly made his impression on them.
After finally hitting the pitch the Relics dominated early possession but were unable to capitalise. The second half was much the same as the first.
Tossils’ Playbook ‘Found’
In an O/45 sensation this correspondent has been handed the Tossils’ playbook from an anonymous source. It provides precise details about all O/45s players including a brief summary written by the Tossils’ coach about each of the Relics. The last entry in the playbook was August 2. Here is what has been said:Kincumber Relics – Outside chance of beating Budgewoi in the Semis but no threat to us. Chokers.
No. 1 Big bastard with massive hands and feet. Difficult to put one past him. Aim low and into the bottom left corner.
No. 2 Cunning defender who is generally safe as a bank. Can clear with both feet. Very quick over the first two metres.
No.3 Don’t let the grey confuse you. Spirited player who always gives 100%. Good left foot. They call him “brumby” but I can’t see how he looks like a horse. Maybe he has other horse-like features.
No. 4 Big arse. Great left foot but has missed several matches with injury. Probably a little precious. Put pressure on this man.
No. 5 Bald as a badger. They call him “crow” probably because he squawks a little too much. Dogged defender. Capable in attack. Watch this player.
No. 6 Usually plays right back. Uncompromising defender. Savage toe poke. Play the left side if this man is on the park.
No 7 Probably the Relics best player. Versatile. Able to play any position. Equally as good in the air and on the ground. Insightful. Skilful. Handsome. Poetry in motion. Our biggest threat to the title.
No. 8 Very skilful. Solid in defence and the midfield. Has a Pommie accent. A little slow off the mark finding it hard to move out of his own shadow. Capable of turning a match.
No. 9 Comes with a big wrap and Relics’ captain. Has never won a toss against us. Once silken skills are beginning to look like old rope. Rumoured to have signed for Budgewoi for 2010. Can fail to finish simple opportunities.
No. 10 A pillar of strength. Doesn’t move much but his strike can be venomous. Can be rattled on the park. Do not give this man any space (or cheek). Often late to games.
No. 11 Big talker. Seems consumed with his own presence. Capable of one dynamic short 20m burst per match. Over-rated. Probably wouldn’t make the starting 11 if the Relics’ made the final.
No. 12 Kamakaze. Covers the ground like a wild boar. What he lacks in finesse he makes up in heart. Always keep an eye on this man (for your own sake). Hits like an axe.
No. 13 Looks 70. Usually plays in the backs and very safe. Difficult to pass. Experience is an asset to the Relics. Always the first player to draw a can from the esky post match.
No. 14 Legs like tooth picks. Very skilful with great elusive skills. Relics’ Coach with a reputation for “going off the handle” at his players. Does not talk to No. 11. Can fail to finish simple opportunities.
No. 15 Stubborn midfielder who obviously hates losing. Team player. Gives his all. When this player shines the Relics win. A man we must watch as we move downhill into the finals.
No. 16 Looks like Freddy Mercury. Great left foot and equally as solid in attack or defence. Big arse like No. 4 and uses his bulk well. Like No 15 when this player is on song the Relics’ usually win.
No. 18 They call him Dallas. Probably because he is as big as Texas. Can be very volatile and obviously has some anger issues. Leading the O/45s in yellows. The Relics’ enforcer.
Well fellow Relics’, what did you think of all of that! I have passed the playbook onto the Smugglers for their perusal.

Relics Add to Gumbies Woes
The opening toss was undertaken in sensational circumstances with Relics skipper Mickledinho handing the coin to Statue. Statue duly won the toss setting the Gumbies up for a difficult second half running up hill and facing the setting Kincumber sun. As a tosser Statue is now one for one and Mickledinho still holds a 0-15 record. After the toss Statue said, “hey man what do you expect, I’m a tossing machine.”

Not content with winning the toss Statue had another impact on the game scoring with his first touch with only three minutes on the clock. Statue’s goal was sensational. After finding the ball at his feet in a packed Gumbies box Statue turned, faked, pirouetted, dummied and shimmied to render the Gumbies defence gob-smacked and pie-eyed before spanking a missile-like strike into the top left hand corner of the net. One long-term Roos’ fan described it as one of the most spectacular individual goals ever witnessed at Frost Reserve. Even Gumbies supporters were delirious with exhilaration. Post match when asked about the goal Statue said, “hey man what do you expect, I’m a goal scoring machine.”
From this point the Relics should have gone on with it and given the hapless Gumbies a shellacking, but that was not to be. Poor execution and poor discipline saw the match turn into a grim slugfest.
Tough-man Dallas the Destroyer earned his second yellow card in as many weeks. There are suspicions that Dallas is popping steroids as he has significantly bulked up in recent weeks and this would also explain his unpredictable and aggressive behaviour – lay off the ‘roids Dallas! Coach Vic in a post match spray ordered Dallas to take a couple of weeks off saying “take some time Dallas, get your &%**#@% head straight. We need you on the park for the semis.”
Downhill, obviously inspired by Dallas also earned a yellow after sending an unfortunate Gumby deep into the crowd watching the match on the adjoining ground with a well-timed shoulder challenge.
Leading goal scorers Mickledinho and Coach Vic also kept their records in-tact missing open goals from less than a metre. It is hard to believe how a shot 50cm from an open goal could miss and actually find the sideline for an opposition throw-in. Mickledinho, however, was able to seek some solace from Diamond who said that he had done that many times.
The Relics need a big win next week against Doyalson to keep their finals charge on full tilt.
